I have a concrete floor, can I cover with solid timber?
Certainly, the best way to install 18 to 22 mm thick T&G solid timber floor on concrete is to anchor down a 12mm ply base on which the floorboards are secret nailed. Of course, if you don’t want to the height of (timber + ply), you can choose the 10 to 14mm overlay timber flooring to be directly stuck down.
I want a hard timber floor; can you please explain what is meant by a Janka rating of timber?
Janka rating is a qualified measure of the hardness of timber, the more resistant the timber the higher the Janka rating. Hardwood floors with Janka rating between 7 and 10 are regarded a HARD, over 10 as VERY HARD and below 7 as MODERATE.
I have heard some bad reports of bamboo; can you tell me why yours is different?
We are sure good reports will far outweigh the “bad” ones. Mostly this will depend on the quality of the bamboo flooring, the way the installers lay it and of course the way the customers use it. Strand woven bamboo floor is a lot harder and stable than most of the timber species. Our woven bamboo floor uses Uniclic system with 14 German coating layers. The four edges are fully sealed with wax providing superior water resistance. And the super low E0 emissions will leave your home safe to live.
The body corporation in our apartment mentioned ‘sound proofing underlay’, what do you recommend?
We carry different quality underlay to suit. For instance, normal grade can be used for houses and acoustic – which comes in specific ratings – for apartment units.
Do I need to leave an expansion gap when I am installing timber or bamboo flooring?
Yes. Timber / bamboo is a natural product, movement is expected over time and should be accounted for. We recommend leaving a 10-15 mm space between the end of the surface and the wall. This will allow the wood to swell without affecting the floor structure and structure of the building.
Will my subfloor need preparation?
This will depend on the condition of the subfloor, if you have concerns ask us to take a look when we come out for your free measure and quote. As a general rule for a:-
Concrete base: Make sure the surface is flat to within 3 mm over 3 metre span. If it isn’t you can use a self-levelling compound or fix plywood underlay directly onto the slab. Surface should be dry, clean and smooth, free from any floating objects that may cause issues. To prevent rising dampness when the floor is laid, we also recommend a polyethylene membrane with overlap seams of 150-200 mm.
Timber, plywood or particle board: Any uneven areas of the surface should be sanded back or padded up. Alternatively, you can simply fix plywood underlay directly to the subfloor. Ensure the base surface is clean and dry.
What is the best way to maintain my timber / bamboo floor?
Minimise the accumulation of dust, grit and sand by vacuuming or sweeping the floor regularly. Doing this will prevent the floor from receiving scratches, and it will help maintain its finish. Another good habit to get into is to clean spills and spots up immediately using a damp cloth or mop. Avoid using solvent based or abrasive cleaners on timber and bamboo flooring, and also try not to walk on the surface with spike or stiletto heels.
Are there any other care tips to retain my floor’s quality?
We always suggest using rugs and mats in entrance ways as this helps to trap the dirt and stops it spreading around your home. Minimise the sunlight directly hitting the surface by installing curtains or blinds over your windows. Support any furniture or heavy appliances that will be sitting on the floor for long periods of time with wide-bearing, non-staining glides or castors, and if you have pets keep their nails trimmed.
Would the use of air conditioning and heating affect my beautiful timber / bamboo floor?
It depends on how they are used. Always bear in mind that maintaining a reasonably stable indoor temperature and humidity range is very important to the timber and bamboo flooring. Don’t use air conditioning and heating excessively as both would reduce the indoor humidity significantly, dry out the timber / bamboo floor and cause excessive movement of the subject flooring. It is a good habit to open doors and windows regularly to allow for fresh air coming into the room with timber / bamboo flooring maintaining a reasonable humidity level.
